PTC releases RSDesigner 7
PTC has launched the most eagerly awaited version of RSDesigner, version 7. This version introduces several new concepts and improves the usability of commonly used functions:

  • New central catalog system with administration system to manage relationships, new submissions and  updates.
  • New Windchill PDMLink and Intralink interface
  • New layer interface with naming and extra ability to automatically set layers through properties, datasets and derived properties
  • Much improved variable connector and group interface with ability to choose how they should look on instancing and greater control
  • Better fiber reporting and handling
  • Better multi-user behavior

This release will greatly improve user's productivity and allow librarians to manage their catalogs and designs in a much more controllable way. Pro/ENGINEER Routed Systems Designer 7 has something for every user; whether they design schematics, manage the catalogs or manage the system that the designs are checked into.

Schematic designers


Most users of RSDesigner use variable connectors and route fibers between them. RSDesigner 7 assists with both activities to make life easier and also to save re-work.

The variable group reorder dialog has been vastly improved in the following ways:

  • Reorder dialog has been simplified for connectors
  • Easier to handle cut away connectors and control the visibility of pins
  • Connectors can be cut away whilst instancing
  • Users can control pin spacing for multiple pins
  • Wires can now retain their position when reordering
  • Variable groups (e.g. relays) use the improved interface
  • Easier to detect when connectors are double pinned

Fibers can now have their direction taken into account in run lists and users can reverse their direction from reports too.

Design and catalog administrators


The new central catalog tool not only allows sharing of catalogs between designs but it introduces management procedures to control them:

  • Users must submit new items for vetting by administrator before they are incorporated
  • Access control stops users from editing central catalog items without permission
  • Users can filter the list of items to show items only in the central catalog, only in the internal catalog or only items already used
  • Designs can use combination of local and central items
  • Catalog verify tool indicates
  • What is local and what is from the central catalog
  • Items that are out of date in central catalog
  • Items awaiting approval
  • Items that have been edited
  • Dependencies are tracked between related objects
  • Existing designs can be converted to central catalog with assistance from the system


With the introduction of the Windchill Workgroup manager RSDesigner designs can now be checked into PDMLink, Intralink 8 or ProjectLink. Viewables and XML can be automatically generated when checking in and BOMs can be stored with the design.

Packed designs are now compressed to about 10% of their original size, including those that are checked into Pro/INTRALINK, thus saving disk space.

PTC has also developed a multi-user procedure for those users that create block- and wiring-harness interconnection diagrams (BID/WID).
